After an embarrassing 6-1 loss to the Buffalo Sabres, their second of the variety this season, and a blown opportunity against a heavily depleted Bruins team, it's safe to say the 2020-21 Flyers are a tragedy. Even if they miraculously turn things around, there will be no forgetting the abysmal first thirty-five games of their season, especially their 6-10-1 record in March. Seven losses of 4+ goals, including a 9-0 beatdown by the Rangers, an 8-3 butt-kicking by that same team eight days later, and 7-3 drubbing at Lake Tahoe to the Bruins team they're chasing limping after for the last playoff spot in the East. The defense has been terrible. The goaltending has been worse. The special teams and coaching decisions haven't been much better. There was a COVID outbreak. Everything is bad. End of story.

There are few things more depressing right now than the Flyers. Maybe that song Driver's License that was insanely popular a few months ago and probably still is now. Heartbroken Flyers fans (like myself) and heartbroken fourteen-year old girls (not like myself) are crying an equal amount of tears over both. Yet these two heart-throbs couldn't be more different.

Until now.

*Music starts playing*

They won a playoff series last year

Just liked I always talked about

‘Cause I was so excited to see them

Finally play in the second round

But today we lost to the Sabres

Crying ‘cause all hope is lost

We'll probably never go deep

At least with not with this core

They’re so much worse than Tampa’s

Or Vegas’s or Toronto’s

Yeah, today we lost nine to nothing

‘Cause how could we ever play any defense?

And I know we weren’t perfect but I’d never seen a series win before

And I just can’t imagine how losing Nisky hurt them this much

Guess you didn’t mean we’d still be one of those 16 teams

‘Cause flags fly forever, but now just the first round’s a dream

And all of my friends are tired

Of hearing how much I miss you, but

I kinda feel sorry for them

Cause they’ll never see an elite Claude Giroux, yeah

Today we lost 8-3 to New York

And Carter got pulled after five

And I know we weren’t perfect but I’d never seen a series win before

And I just can’t imagine how losing Nisky them hurt this much

I guess you didn’t mean we’d still be one of those 16 teams

‘Cause flags fly forever, but now just the first round’s a dream

Red lights, goal horns

I still see the breakdowns, the bad goals, “oh no”

Can’t even beat those teams that we used to run through

How do I still love you, Coots (ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh)

Bad gaps, they walked

They just keep on shooting, through traffic, they’re blasting

Scoring all the goals

The goalie’s pulled, we’re SO through

How do I still love you, Moose (ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh)

And I know we weren’t perfect but I’d never seen a series win before

And I just can’t imagine how losing Nisky hurt them this much

Guess you didn’t mean we’d still be one of those 16 teams

‘Cause flags fly forever, but now just the first round’s a dream

Flags fly forever, but now just the first round’s a dream

(This took me about five minutes to write, which is less time than the Flyers have led in a recent six-game stretch against the Devils, Rangers, Rangers, Sabres, Sabres, and Islanders. And seen.)
